The Kyoto Profile

京都市 (Kyoto-shi)

This is my attempt to construct a portrait of Kyoto-shi, my new city. From my four years in Los Angeles, I have learned that every city possesses a unique flavor that can only be tasted over time. My hope, is that through little snippits of life in Kyoto, I can give you a sample of what makes Kyoto… well Kyoto. Enjoy

We’ll start with the basics-

Location

Kyoto map japan

Kyoto is located on western Honshu, the main island of Japan, in what is known as the Kansai region. Some of Kyoto’s noteworthy neighbors are Osaka and Kobe. These three form a metropolitan tri-city region.

Overview

For many centuries, Kyoto was the capital of Japan. Tokyo replaced it in 1869, but Kyoto-shi is still the capital of Kyoto-fu (Kyoto Prefecture), so that’s pretty rad. Today, Kyoto is still considered a major cultural capital of Japan, as it is where much traditional Japanese culture still lives strong. It is also the Buddhist and Shinto capital of the country, due to the hundreds of ancient temples and shrines that occupy the city. Because it was one of the few major Japanese cities to be spared from bombings in WWII, much of these historical sites are still standing as they have been for centuries.

With a population of nearly 1.5 million, Kyoto is currently Japan’s 8th most populous city.

Fun Facts Part 1

  • According to my friends in Tokyo, people in Kyoto “talk funny”. Some say it’s a more elegant dialect. Oh fancy.
  • Nintendo’s headquarters are in Kyoto.
  • Another major (and more traditional) industry of Kyoto is sake 酒 brewing.

More to Come

All the above knowledge is either form Wikipedia or here-say. At the time of publishing this, i have yet to step foot in Kyoto, let alone Japan. Over time, I will be able to present a more detailed perspective as a local in Kyoto-shi. We have much to look forward to.
